Shingle Brands the City Approves

Roof replacement in the area starts with the brand. The city keeps its own approved list of shingle manufacturers, and anything outside it needs written sign-off before a bundle goes up. Two layers of asphalt is the limit before everything comes off down to the wood. On the 1950s houses along Old Shakopee Road, stripping down to the wood is nearly every job, and the waterproof edge layer reaches two feet past the outside wall.

Interstate 35W splits the city in two. East of it, out around Oxboro Lake and Valley View, the houses went up in the 1950s on smaller lots and most are on their first full exterior replacement. West, past Normandale Lake and Bush Lake, the streets date from the 1970s and 1980s, the houses are bigger, and the work usually covers trim that has already been painted twice.
